
Washington, D.C., February 5 - Morgan State University and PERI Institute of Technology (PERI-IT) were recognized today for the formation of an International Collaborative to Prepare Engineering Students to Address Global Needs with Engineering, IT, Clean Tech and other solutions. Speaking at the meeting of the Utility Market Access (UMA) Subcommittee of the National Association of Utility Regulatory Commissioners (NARUC) Winter Conference, Sarav Periasamy, PERI IT Chairman and founder stated that the "Collaborative will include, development of a Joint Curriculum, Faculty-Student Exchange, Research & Development and Demonstration Programs." Periasamy added, "It will provide students at each institution the ability to study abroad their senior year, and will afford students alumni status from both institutions upon completion of their respective institution's degree requirements."

Chairman Williams noted "the UMA Subcommittee Passed a resolution (2012 Winter Resolutions) that recognizes the critical role that Historically Black Colleges and Universities like Morgan State University and their partner PERI Institute of Technology must play in addressing the critical technical workforce shortage facing America's utilities industry as the Baby Boomer generation retires."
"The Morgan State University-PERI IT International Collaborative is the first university training and educational partnership that I know of that focuses on preparing students in clean energy technology for the global market place by actually training students both in the U.S. and overseas in Chennai, India, two international hubs for information technology and innovation," said Commissioner Jeanne Fox of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, UMA Subcommittee Member and Chair of NARUC's Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment.
"It will provide students with both quality engineering education and real world experiences enabling them to make a global impact," added Fox.
UMA Subcommittee member Timothy Allen Simon, Commissioner California Public Utilities Commission and Chair, NARUC Committee on Gas commented, "The Morgan State University - PERI IT International Collaborative is a good example of how technology companies and HBCUs can partner to prepare students to compete in the global market for technology, as well as filling critical technical workforce shortages for America's Energy Utilities."
